Stompin' at the Swamp is excited this year to feature DJs from throughout the Southeast.
Abdel began DJ'ing in 1999 and has become one of Florida's most popular DJs. His music collection currently spans nine decades and over hundreds of artists.
His style focuses on being a conduit between the dancers and the music, establishing connections between each of the songs that keep the dancers anticipating each new development in an evening. By maintaining both a variety and a flow of music, he ensures that dancers remain invigorated and excited, inspiring them to adapt as the music evolves over the course of an evening.
Dan got hooked on dancing in 1998, and his repertoire includes lindy, blues, and tango. He is widely known for being simultaneously exuberant and analytical in both his dancing and DJ'ing. His music collection is built on jazz and blues songs firmly rooted in the American idiom, with tunes that occasionally come from halfway across the globe.
His passion for music of all sorts brings him to exchanges and workshops throughout the Southeast and beyond. He's DJ'ed for Lindy Focus, BluesSHOUT, Battle of the Cities, and the Yehoodi Radio Show. When he's not collecting music, cataloging music, dancing to music, or thinking about music, he spends his time learning to play saxophone, and supposedly getting a Ph.D. in Physics.
Michael has won awards throughout the Southeast for his attention to the crowd and stylistic diversity. He'll play rare recordings of hot dance bands of the 20s and 30s, and also play your favorite vocal standard. He will play modern, groovy jazz when appropriate, classic Savoy Ballroom jumpers, chunky, bouncy early jazz, and stuff that's just not jazz at all. He loves the Lindy Hop scene and all its little baby scenes, and enjoys the challenge of figuring out what each crowd wants to hear. "Every dance floor is unique. It is simply my job to watch, learn, and create as much dance floor pleasure as possible."
Freddy has been dancing for nine years and has been DJ'ing in Florida since 2001. From gypsy jazz and ragtime to lindyhop and blues, he keeps people motivated on the dance floor. If a song has a groove in it, he will play it.
Hurley, winner of the 2007 UCF Swing Knights Amateur DJ Contest, is excited to share his passion for swing music and dancing at this year's Stompin' at the Swamp. He loves vintage hot jazz and classic swing music recorded in the 20s, 30s, and 40s — the music that sparked the Charleston and inspired pure joy in the hearts of the first lindy hoppers. You'll be sure to hear many of the classics such as Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Artie Shaw, Slim Gaillard, Django Reinhardt, and even Andy Kirk and the Twelve Clouds of Joy. Hurley is also keeping his eyes and ears open for high quality music of any era that will inspire a variety of swing dancers.
