The weekend will feature two contests, the first regarding the origins of swing and the second the future. No contest fees, but start planning your costume now!
The opening dance of the weekend will feature a Cakewalk. Cakewalks originated in Florida and set the tune for the rebellion that became swing dancing.
There will be two divisions based on whether you dress the part. The winners in each division will receive home baked prizes of hoecakes and pulled molasses candy.
Contestants will strut, bow, and kick as high as they can to the music of ragtime! Check out the Streetswings Dance History Archives for history and inspiration.
This division is open to all, even if you're wearing (egads!) jeans.
To compete in this division, think suits, gowns, gloves, top hats and canes!
What will swing dancers look like in the centuries to come? We'll find out at our Future Dance on Sunday night!
You are encouraged to dress as robots, astronauts, or something beyond our conception.
There will be a crafts table out with extra aluminum foil, tape, scissors and markers in case you need to make any last-minute enhancements. :-)
